Géolocation recently acquired state-of-the-art R12i geodetic GNSS receivers. We are proud to be pioneers in the use of this new equipment in Canada. The special feature of these receivers recently launched by Trimble is the tilt sensors. As a result, it allows us to precisely position a pole even when tilted.
The inertial unit, the secret of the R12i
The R12i uses satellite positioning to position the receiver with centimeter accuracy. What sets it apart is the integration of sensors that together constitute the IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). Indeed, this unit uses accelerometers to measure in real time the acceleration in each of the directions (X, Y and Z) and gyroscopes to measure the rotational speeds around the 3 axes of the instrument. A powerful algorithm processes all GNSS and IMU measurements to calculate the position, angle and tilt direction of the receiver. The goal is then to obtain the centimeter position of the rod.
Benefits and applications
Thanks to these new assets, Géolocation is able to offer even more efficient, competitive and reliable services for its customers. The applications are numerous: building corner measurement, bathymetry with tilt compensation, surveying in wooded areas, surveying places inaccessible for safety reasons and even more. In fact, tilt compensation makes it possible to measure certain elements within a few seconds. It is much faster than before with the conventional method. It virtually eliminates the need to use the total station.In addition, the R12i uses ProPoint technology, which greatly improves the quality of data in woodlands. This algorithm analyzes received GNSS signals and applies advanced filters to them to better identify problematic signals. This way, more signals are considered in the calculation which ensures more reliable and accurate positioning when the signal reception is an issue (trees or buildings).
Also, the consideration of the L5 frequency in the position calculation further improves the possibilities with the device. Recently installed on several satellites, this frequency provides better performances than the other ones. This is due to its wavelength which offers higher penetration through the leaves. This frequency is usually dedicated for aeronautical navigation, which guarantees a robust and safe signal.
